The Lawra District is one of the nine Districts that make up the Upper West Region and derives its legal existence from Legislative Instrument (L.I) 1434 of 1988. It lies in the North Western corner of the Upper West Region in Ghana between Latitudes 2 25W and 2°45"W and Longitudes 10°20" N and 11°00"N.


It is bounded to the East and South by the Jirapa and Lambussie-Karni District and to the North and West by the Republic of Burkina Faso. The total area of the District is put at 1,051.2 square kilometres. This constitutes about 5.7% of the Region’s total area, which is estimated at 18,476 square kilometres.

There are several tourist sites that are of inmense interest to visitors to this part of the country. One is the Gothic stone church at Nandom, whose classic architecture is of historic significance.

Agriculture is also of significance to the people especially livestock production which  is high in the district.Animal rearing is one of the most lucrative ventures undertaken .
